Nearly one-fourth of District 54 students qualify for the federal free lunch program. Although District 54 receives state and federal funds for the lunch program, schools that want to offer breakfast programs to our students in need must raise the money on their own.
The D54 Foundation has committed to raising enough money to fund breakfast programs at all District 54 schools to ensure that students begin their day ready to learn. You can help by donating to the Foundation’s Food 4 Thought program.
Donations of any size to Food 4 Thought have a direct impact on students’ lives. It costs just $1 a day, or $5 a week, to provide a healthy breakfast to a student; a $200 donation provides breakfast to a child for a full school year. Businesses/corporations and individuals can also sponsor an entire school for a full year with a donation of $10,000.
To make a secure donation: Donate online to the Food for Thought Program, or you can download the Food 4 Thought Donation Form. For more information, call (847) 357-5141 or e-mail [email protected].
Breakfast Club is amazing because I get to spend time with my little sister and I get to eat food and I love food and without food I would be hungry all day. And my little sister is the best!

The Breakfast Club program makes such a positive impact for our students. It not only provides a nutritional component to start their day off right but it is the social emotional component that I love. Students come to a place where they are greeted with a smile, maybe a hug and have the opportunity to talk with a friend or share a concern with an adult. They may walk into Breakfast Club with a frown but they almost always leave with a positive mindset!

Breakfast Club is awesome because I have friends to talk to and there is good food to eat and we get snacks! It helps me get energy inside of me so I can play and work!

What I think is special about breakfast club is that each student walks in and greets us in their own special way, so not only are they getting breakfast but they are making their first emotional connection of the day too!
Judy, Hoover Elementary School
The kids who qualify for the program not only look forward to enjoying breakfast each morning, but sharing what is going on in their lives. It is a great way to start their day!
Kristen, Frost Junior High Social Worker
Breakfast Club is a time in the morning when kids get to eat and read books. We get to talk to friends. So you can get energy from drinking milk and eating cereal bars and it’s a time when you can talk to friends – but more eating, less talking.

Affording students the opportunity to eat before they start their day is vital to the success of their day. Their brains need the nutrients and energy to persevere through the academic day.
